Correctly discharging and disposing of the condensate that occurs in a compressed-air network is critical to keeping the system functioning properly and at the correct network pressure. This often-overlooked step is essential to maintain peak efficiency. This section explains the role of the condensate drain in the compressed-air network.
Compressed air carries impurities such as water, oil, and tiny particles that occur naturally in ambient air or are introduced by the compression process (for example, rust and pipe scale). CompAir air-treatment products remove these impurities: air dryers use different technologies to dry the air and remove water vapour, while air filters remove solid particles.
Once water and particles are removed from the airstream, the condensate drain removes this condensate mixture so it can be disposed of correctly. The condensate is usually routed into an oil/water separator so the oil can be handled safely. Only then is the compressed air ready for production use.
A condensate drain is a special type of valve that can operate in several ways depending on the installation. For example, a timer-controlled drain can purge at defined intervals; unpowered drains operate without an electrical supply; and a compressed-air energy saver can be linked to a light switch to shut the drain when lights are off at the end of a shift—preventing pressure losses.
Our electronic condensate drains are designed for compressed air and industrial gases. They are specifically engineered to work in conjunction with compressed-air filters, refrigeration dryers, wet air receivers, and aftercoolers to reduce leaks and improve overall system efficiency.
